The Challenge
A technology-focused client needed to understand which consumer groups represented the strongest opportunity for growth.
The objective was not simply to describe the market.
The research needed to identify consumers who were both:
High-value within the category, and
Strongly aligned with the brand’s proposition.
The challenge was to move beyond broad demographics and uncover the combinations of behaviors, attitudes, needs, and motivations that made certain consumer groups more likely to convert.
The client also needed more than a segmentation model.
They needed a practical answer to a second question:
Once we know who the priority segments are, how do we actually win them?
How We Responded
Ethos designed the segmentation as a staged research program combining qualitative and quantitative methods.
Exploratory qualitative research:
The first stage uncovered current behaviors, attitudes, unmet needs, motivations, and the variables influencing consumer decisions.
Quantitative market sizing and segmentation:
The next stage measured the broader market, identify meaningful consumer clusters, and assess which segments represent the strongest opportunity based on factors such as category value, needs, and proposition fit.
Deep-dive qualitative research:
Priority segments were then explored in greater depth to understand the people behind the data, including their motivations, decision journeys, barriers, expectations, and emotional drivers.
Segment storytelling:
Rather than presenting segments as statistical profiles alone, each priority audience was developed into a clear, human-centered picture that teams can easily understand and apply.
Activation workshops:
Cross-functional teams then worked through practical questions around product, communications, positioning, and customer experience to determine how the organization can better acquire and serve each priority segment.
Research Methods Used
Exploratory Qualitative Research:
Used to understand behaviors, attitudes, needs, motivations, and the factors influencing consumer choices.
Quantitative Segmentation:
Used to identify distinct consumer groups and estimate their relative size and opportunity.
Market Sizing:
Determined the scale of the addressable opportunity and prioritize the segments with the greatest commercial potential.
Deep-Dive Interviews and Qualitative Research:
Used to bring priority segments to life and uncover the deeper reasons behind their behavior.
Consumer Profiling:
Transformed segmentation data into accessible, human-centered audience profiles.
Stakeholder Workshops:
Helped internal teams translate research into practical product, marketing, communications, and acquisition strategies.
Results & Strategic Impact
✅ Identified the consumer groups with the strongest growth and acquisition potential
✅ Moved targeting beyond broad demographics into behavioral, attitudinal, and needs-based segmentation
✅ Helped teams understand not only who the priority consumers are, but why they behave the way they do
✅ Created clear segment profiles that can guide both strategic and tactical decisions
✅ Supported more relevant product, communications, and customer-experience strategies
✅ Gave cross-functional teams a shared framework for deciding where to focus resources and how to win priority audiences
